Population effects on the Red Giant Clump absolute magnitude, and distance determinations to nearby galaxies
The red giant clump has been recently argued to be a reliable distance indicator for the galaxies in the Local Group. The accuracy of distance determinations based on this method, however, depend on the possible presence of systematic magnitude differences (∆M I ) between the local clump revealed by the Hipparcos colour-magnitude diagram, and the clump stars observed in distant galaxies. In thi...
متن کاملEffect of Distance Errors: Applications to Sdss Early-type Galaxies
Noisy distance estimates associated with photometric rather than spectroscopic redshifts lead to a mis-estimate of the luminosities, and produce a correlated mis-estimate of the sizes. We consider a sample of early-type galaxies from the SDSS DR6 and apply the generalization of the Vmax method to correct for these biases. We show that our technique recovers the true redshift, magnitude and size...
متن کاملLong-range distance determinations in biomacromolecules by EPR spectroscopy.
Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy provides a variety of tools to study structures and structural changes of large biomolecules or complexes thereof. In order to unravel secondary structure elements, domain arrangements or complex formation, continuous wave and pulsed EPR methods capable of measuring the magnetic dipole coupling between two unpaired electrons can be used to obta...
متن کاملDynamical distance as a semi-metric on nuclear conguration space
In this paper, we introduce the concept of dynamical distance on a nuclear conguration space. We partition the nuclear conguration space into disjoint classes. This classification coincides with the classical partitioning of molecular systems via the concept of conjugacy of dynamical systems. It gives a quantitative criterion to distinguish dierent molecular structures.
